It is the absolute honor and privilege of Crimson Estate Services, along with the family of Major General David Jones, to present a historic collection worthy of your inspection. Major General David M. Jones enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Cavalryman in 1930 and was later selected to go to pilot training in 1937 at Randolph-Kelly in San Antonio, TX. Major General Jones' career was one that was nothing short of heroic at any point during his service. A fantastic synopsis of Major General Jones' career can be viewed by using this link: http://veterantributes.org/Tri...
* General Jones volunteered for the Doolittle Project, and he and his crew were the fifth to take off from the USS Hornet on April 18, 1942. After successfully hitting his target along Tokyo Bay, General Jones and his crew parachuted to safety over China. For his participation in the Tokyo Raid, General Jones was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. The connection Jones formed with General Doolittle during this time was the beginning of a friendship that lasted for decades, and it is our understanding that General Doolittle was a regular at Jones family holidays.
* General Jones was shot down over North Africa in December 1942, and spent the rest of the war (2.5 years) as a prisoner in Stalag Luft III.
* General Jones was captive at Stalag Luft III (Sagan, Nazi Germany; now Poland), which was for allied pilots and was monitored by Luftwaffe personal. General Jones was a part of "The March" between Stalag Luft III and Stalag Luft VII-A. This epic march with extreme weather can be reviewed here: https://stalagluft3.com/long-m...
* Steve McQueen’s character in the 1963 film "The Great Escape" was a composite of General Jones himself and a few others held captive. Jones was one of only three Americans who dug in the tunnels.
* General Jones was the Wing Commander at RAF Sculthorpe, England from 1952-1955. Sculthorpe was a B-45 unit, and was the first "nuclear capable" bomber base in Europe.
*General Jones was later the Director of the Flight Test Acceptance Program for the Air Force. As a B-58 Hustler pilot himself, he at one point had logged more Mach 2 hours in an aircraft than any other airman. During this same time period, early test pilots such as the Mercury 9 and Gemini astronauts were being selected for future space flight.
*General Jones was selected as Director of the GAM-87 "Skybolt" program, which was the predecessor of the cruise missile.
* General Jones' storied career ended upon his retirement as Deputy Administrator for Manned Space Flight (1963-1973). At this time he was also the commander for the Eastern Test Range (Kennedy Space Center). General Jones was involved with NASA as the wing commander essentially of the Manned Space Flight Program from 1964 thru his retirement in 1973.
* General Jones was close with many of our original astronauts at NASA and especially those during the Saturn VI/Apollo program.
We simply cannot condense General Jones' valiant career within the confines of this space, so we encourage you to ask questions as the family will be available and happy to elaborate.
